Energy Storage & Charging

Bidirectional Power Needs Magnetics Sized for It

Battery test and formation equipment, industrial chargers and storage inverters move power in both directions, switch at high frequency and often run around the clock. That puts demands on isolation, filter inductor losses and thermal design that general-purpose parts are not built for.

We help OEMs and integrators specify isolation transformers, LCL and line filter inductors, DC chokes and auxiliary transformers. Related: data centers & energy.

Typical Applications

  • ■ Battery cyclers & formation: Isolation transformers and filter inductors for regenerative test channels.
  • ■ Industrial & motive-power chargers: Input transformers and output DC chokes for SCR and high-frequency chargers.
  • ■ BESS power conversion: Grid-side filter inductors and auxiliary or isolation transformers.
  • ■ UPS and DC systems: Input and output magnetics for rectifier and inverter stages.
  • ■ Lab and EV test benches: Isolation for test equipment connected to the plant supply.

Common Questions

Battery test, BESS and charger magnetics: common questions

What makes a filter inductor for a grid-tied inverter different?

It carries the fundamental current plus high-frequency ripple from inverter switching. The ripple drives core and winding losses that a 60 Hz reactor is not designed for, so the switching frequency and ripple current must be specified along with inductance and rated current.

Do battery cyclers need isolation transformers?

Many regenerative cyclers and formation systems use isolation between the plant supply and the test channels, either inside the equipment or as a separate transformer. Whether it is required depends on the equipment design and the site, so follow the equipment maker’s requirements.

How is duty cycle handled for battery test equipment?

Test schedules can cycle between charge, discharge and rest for long periods. Magnetics are sized thermally from the RMS current over the schedule and the peak current, so sharing the test profile gives a better-sized and often smaller part.

What information do you need to quote charger magnetics?

The charger type, AC input voltage, DC output voltage and current, the rectifier or converter topology, the switching frequency for high-frequency designs, cooling, and the enclosure space available.
