Independent representative notice: AMP Magnetics represents manufacturers serving this market. It does not manufacture, stock, or take title to product, and maintains no warehouse or inventory in this state.

Texas is electrically distinct from the rest of the continental United States. Most of the state is served by ERCOT, an interconnection largely isolated from the Eastern and Western grids, with its own market structure, interconnection process and reliability standards. Assumptions carried in from MISO or PJM work do not transfer cleanly.

Industrial base

  • Petrochemical and refining along the Gulf Coast and the Houston Ship Channel. Classified areas, corrosive coastal atmosphere, and severe-duty requirements. This is genuine NEMA 4X territory where 316 stainless is the correct answer and 304 will pit — the chloride load in coastal air makes that a service-life question, not a preference.
  • Battery energy storage. ERCOT hosts the most active grid-scale storage market in the country. Bidirectional power conversion, duty-cycle-driven thermal sizing, interconnection transformers seeing inverter output rather than utility sinusoid, and outdoor containerised environments with wide ambient swings.
  • Data centres across the Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio markets, with the same non-linear load profile seen nationally but on a grid with materially different interconnection dynamics.
  • Oilfield and midstream across the Permian and Eagle Ford, where remote services are weak, generator operation is common, and both facts tighten the harmonic compliance case considerably.

Grid and utility context

ERCOT covers roughly 90% of the state's load, with El Paso, parts of the Panhandle and the eastern edge outside it. Oncor, CenterPoint Energy and AEP Texas are the principal transmission and distribution service providers; retail is deregulated across most of the territory.

Three specification consequences follow:

  • Weak remote services. Oilfield and rural industrial sites frequently sit at the end of long distribution runs. A low Isc/IL ratio can hold an installation to 5.0% TDD where a comparable urban site would have a 15% allowance.
  • Generator operation is routine, not exceptional. That matters for passive filter selection, because leading power factor at light load can destabilise a generator's voltage regulator. Switched filter stages or an active solution are often the right answer.
  • Storage interconnection is governed by IEEE 1547 alongside ERCOT's own requirements, and the interconnection agreement generally sets numbers stricter than the generic standards.

Ambient temperature deserves explicit attention. Outdoor equipment in direct Texas sun operates well above the 40 °C standard ambient assumption, and specifying to the code default rather than the real condition is a recurring cause of thermal trouble.
